Adriana Trandafir studied acting in the classes of Leopoldina Balănuță, Alexa Visarion and Alexandru Lazăr at the Institute of Theatrical and Cinematic Art, Bucharest.

From 1979 to 1982 she was an actress at the State Theatre, Reșița, and from 1982 to 2005 at the Odeon Theatre. She has worked for the Ager and Atlantis film production companies, appearing in films including Hazelnut Chocolate (1979), Europolis (2010), and The Sacrifice (2019). She has presented television programmes including A Folk Star and Neighbours and is a fixture on Romanian Radio. An actress of remarkable musical talent, she is the chairwoman of the Maria Tănase Foundation.

Adriana Trandafir has received numerous awards, including the UNITER Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Part in 2004, for the rôle of the Mother in Why Does the Child Boil in the Polenta; the Award for Best Comedy Actress at the Galați Theatre Festival in 2002, for the rôle of Rose Quimet in Les Belles Soeurs; the Award for Best Comedy Actress at the Galați Theatre Festival in 2000, for the rôle of Ana in Stars in the Morning Light; the Grand Prize for Performance at the Brăila Contemporary Theatre Festival, for the rôle of Maria Tănase in The Enchanted Bird; the Grand Prize at the Bacău Actors’ Recitals Gala in 1995; the Perfomance Award at the National Student Theatre Festival in 1979; and the Best Production and Directing Awards at the Durham Shakespeare Festival in 1978, for her Romeo and Juliet.

In 2004, the President of Romania bestowed on Adriana Trandafir the Order of Cultural Merit to the rank of Chevalier ‘in token of esteem for her career as a whole and for her dedication and performing talent in service of the theatrical and performing arts.’
