George Ivașcu

George Ivașcu studied at the Institute of Theatrical and Cinematic Arts, graduating in 1993. In a career spanning more than twenty-five years, he has appeared on every major stage in Bucharest and Romania. In 1993, he joined the company of the Comedy Theatre, and since 1996, he has been a member of the company of the Ion Luca Caragiale National Theatre, Bucharest.

George Ivașcu teaches in the Acting Department of the Ion Luca Caragiale National University of Theatrical and Cinematic Arts and is Dean of the Theatre Faculty.

He is a prominent actor and director and a leading cultural figure, having managed the Metropolis Theatre in Bucharest since he founded it in 2007. As a cultural manager, he has made a name for himself as a promotor and supporter of the younger generation in the theatre, as well as for his interest in preserving the memory of Romania’s film and theatre legends, having conceived the Celebrities Lane project in Piața Timpului. He is also the founder of the Metropolis online cultural daily.

He has played the lead in more than a dozen films, appeared in more than fifty theatre productions, acted more than one hundred parts for National Radio Theatre, directed twelve theatre productions, and received more than thirty awards. In 2018, he was given the portfolio of Minister of Culture and National Identity. He is a member of UNITER and, in his capacity as an actor, university professor, and manager, he is regularly invited to sit on various commissions and competition juries.

In 2004, the President of Romania bestowed on George Ivașcu the Order of Cultural Merit to the rank of Chevalier, ‘”in token of esteem for his career as a whole and for his dedication and acting talent in service of the theatrical and performing arts”.
