Rodica Mandache and young actor Eduard Păuna have come to present the show A Hand for the Poet… on the stage of the Thalia Concert Hall, on Wednesday, June 28th, starting 7 PM, as part of the International Theater Festival in Sibiu. The two artists have recited verses by and about Eminescu, in an astounding musical ambiance, created by Cătălin Răducanu on the piano and the concert cimbalom.

“This performance is like a gift for me. The premiere was in January, at the National University of Music Bucharest and was, at that point, dedicated to National Culture Day. The energy the spectators transferred to me stayed with me for a long time after. The hall was full and I was energized by the emotions of the spectators. Now, the performance is already solidified, Eduard and I have rehearsed many times, and I hope the same powerful emotion will take over Sibiu as well, around the day of Eminescu’s great passing”, said actress Rodica Mandache.

The performance was complemented by screenings with iconic actors — Victor Rebengiuc, Mariana Mihuţ, Constantin Chiriac, Ştefan Bănică, Alexandru Repan, and, through an archived intervention, Ion Caramitru — big names of the Romanian performing arts scene, participating in the A Hand for the Poet project, through reciting classic Romanian poets such as Mihai Eminescu, Lucian Blaga, Tudor Arghezi, George Bacovia, George Topîrceanu, Ion Minulescu, Nichita Stănescu, Marin Sorescu.

Young actor Eduard Păuna dedicates this performance to a generation that is finding difficulty in exploring poetry, Gen Z: “I am excited about performing this show and about having the honor of appearing in a festival as large as IFTS. I am grateful that I can, once again, share the stage with Rodica Mandache and Cătălin Răducanu. This is a performance that could encourage young people to explore poetry more. So I invite every one of my generation, that will be in Sibiu at the end of June, to come and hear the poetry recited on stage. It’s worth trying out”, declared actor Eduard Păuna.

A spectacular and synergic experiment: poetry recited on stage and in video recording and music played on piano and cimbalom, in a concert hall. “It’s a performance full of authentic emotions, I am convinced that the public will be captivated by the feelings we, the artists, will be offering. I can’t wait to meet the spectators of a Festival of such international reach”, added Cătălin Răducanu.

The A Hand for the Poet… on Stage project is a complex multimedia performance, having its beginnings in Ovidiu Miculescu’s idea, with Oltea Şerban-Pârâu as musical director, Virgil Oprina on video, Diana Mihailopol as stage director and production by Adina Dragomir. A Hand for the Poet is a project seeking to promote Romanian poetry, both nationally as well as abroad. It initially began online, during the pandemic, but later on, developed in mixed and diverse performances on prestigious stages such as The National Theatre Bucharest or The Stela Popescu Theatre.

Recited by actor Demeter András

Invitees:
Ovidiu Miculescu, founder of the project
Oltea Șerban-Pârâu, artistic advisor

A unique project, that has already had multiple fully-booked performances in Romania.
Demeter András’ recital was mixed with the online video interventions of iconic Romanian actors such as Victor Rebengiuc, Mariana Mihuț, Mihaela Rădulescu, Ion Caramitru, but also those of the representatives of the project — Ovidiu Miculescu, the founder of the project, and Oltea Șerban-Pârâu, its artistic advisor. The latter two spoke to the public about the importance of poetry in the age of speed, and about the effort to support this cultural sphere, marginalized in the contemporary era.

A Hand for the Poet is an escape. A meeting between what human life is and what it could or should be. A polychromy of inner forces that any person living on this Earth needs. Bringing it back in a hybrid version, on Hungarian Poetry Day, both in Budapest and in the incredibly important academic base that Szeged is, is a ground 0 meeting for any performing artist. I am happy I will be that artist on April 11th!” (Demeter András)

A Hand for the Poet – Vastaps a KÖLTŐNEK is a specific Hungarian adaptation of the project A Hand for the Poet/Aplauze pentru poet, an astonishing initiative to promote classic and modern Romanian poetry to the local, as well as the international public.

Rodica Mandache and young actor Eduard Păuna recited verses by and about Eminescu, in a musical ambiance created by Cătălin Răducanu on the piano and the cimbalom, on January 21st, at 5 PM, in the George Enescu Hall of the National University of Music Bucharest. Verses by other classic Romanian poets, recited by iconic actors of the Romanian performance arts scene, complemented the performance.

The performance that took place on January 21st, is available online starting January 28th 2023, on YouTube and Facebook, through the aplauzepentrupoet.thecultureclub.ro platform.

“Eminescu was a genius!”, Cioran tells us. “A genius that never ceases to amaze me. And we are obliged by his genius and by the unrest that he has poured into our souls.” Alain Bosquet responds to him: “The genius offers an atrocious responsibility, Eminescu is the youth and enthusiasm of an age, and at the same time its tragic turmoil!”. Caragiale said: “I was very keen on meeting him. I don’t know why I was picturing the young adventurer as a future adult. And in my mind, a future adult had to be a monster. I proved profoundly true. He was a beauty. A classic appearance, framed by some long dark locks, some big eyes… through these windows of the soul it was obvious someone was inside. A kind, yet profoundly melancholic smile.”

The A Hand for the Poet… on Stage on National Culture Day, a complex multimedia performance, birthed of Ovidiu Miculescu’s idea, with Oltea Şerban-Pârâu as musical director, and video by Virgil Oprina, brought live poetry to the stage — poetry by iconic Romanian poets: George Topîrceanu, Ion Minulescu, Lucian Blaga, Tudor Arghezi, George Bacovia, Nichita Stănescu, Marin Sorescu. Mihai Eminescu’s poetry was screened and interpreted by actors Alexandru Repan, Ştefan Bănică, Victor Rebengiuc, Mariana Mihuţ, Constantin Chiriac, and complemented by the archived intervention of Ion Caramitru.

A SHOW BIRTHED FROM AN IDEA OF OVIDIU MICULESCU.

Horaţiu Mălăele and Emilia Popescu carried out, under the auspices of Ion Caramitru, in a musical ambiance created by Cătălin Răducanu, a unique poetic and musical performance.

Mihai Eminescu’s and other Romanian poets’ (Nichita Stănescu, Ştefan Augustin Doinaş, Emil Brumaru, and more) lyrical creations stood center stage during this event, through a selection centered around a main theme — love. The artists entered an imaginary dialogue with Ion Caramitru, present through the final recording executed for the project A Hand for the Poet. Birthed of Ovidiu Miculescu’s idea, this project is an act of restoration and an effort to support a cultural sphere that has been marginalized in the contemporary era. It blends poetry with acting, recitals, music, and visual components. The performance was directed by Claudiu Goga, with Oltea Şerban-Pârâu as musical director, and video by Virgil Oprina.

It was an exceptional night, the first of a series we want to continue at the National Theatre Bucharest, whose objective is, among others, to cultivate the viewers’ thirst for the arts.

Tickets were available at the National Theatre Bucharest ticket office and, online, on www.mystage.ro.
